Vikas Mushroom farm was established by Mr. Vikas Benal after completing his Masters in Commerce from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla in 1988. The farm had a humble beginning with 200 bags of button mushroom in 1990 without any formal training from any institution.

Vikas Mushroom Farm, born from a humble investment of Rs. 5,000 in 1990, has evolved into a pioneering force in mushroom cultivation. From a small compost pasteurization tunnel to automated compost units, our journey is one of relentless innovation.

In 2013, we made history by successfully growing Shiitake mushrooms on willow tree sawdust, setting new standards. Today, we produce White Button, Oyster, and Shiitake mushrooms, employing over 300 people and delivering 800 metric tons of annual crops.

Company history

Journey to 300+ employees

  • 1988

    Mr. Vikas Benal completes his Masters in Commerce from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.

  • 1990

    Vikas Mushroom Farm is established with a humble beginning. 200 bags of White Button mushrooms are grown without any formal training, leading to a gross profit of Rs 10,000.

  • 1991

    A 10 MT capacity compost pasteurization unit is set up with steam pasteurization. A growing room with a capacity of 1000 mushroom bags is constructed for White Button mushrooms.

  • 1992-1995

    Year by year, the number of cropping rooms increases, and seasonal mushroom cultivation continues.

  • 1995

    Seasonal cultivation of Dhingri (Oyster) mushrooms begins.

  • 1996

    The first air-conditioned cropping chamber is built, enabling year-round mushroom cultivation.

  • 2000

    A spawn production unit is started to fulfill in-house requirements and meet outside demands, with a capacity of 100 MT.

  • 2001-2002

    Unwashed mushrooms are marketed in punnets with cling film to enhance shelf life and market acceptability.

  • 2003-2004

    Printed labels of the farm are used in polybags and punnets for traceability and authenticity.

  • 2008

    Value addition of mushrooms through pickles and dried mushrooms begins.

  • 2010

    The compost production unit expands and becomes fully automated, with a capacity to produce 5000 MT pasteurized compost per annum.

  • 2011-2013

    Successful cultivation of Shiitake mushrooms on sawdust of willow trees. Mr. Vikas Benal becomes the first person in the country to use willow trees as a substrate for growing Shiitake. Shiitake cultivation on natural wood logs also begins.

  • 2014-2015

    Mr. Benal visits countries like Japan, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany for collaboration and expertise.

  • 2016

    Attends Mushroom Days and ISMS Congress in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

  • 2016-2018

    A new, fully automated mushroom compost and growing unit is set up in Distt. Mohali, Punjab, with a capacity of 6,000 metric tons of compost per annum and 600 metric tonnes of mushrooms per annum.

  • 2018

    Vikas Benal provides direct and indirect employment to more than 300 people. The cropping capacity strengthens, with the present annual crop touching 800 MT per annum.
